Inspiration for the art work of Lisa McConnell comes from different and varied sources. The native Tlinget village in Alaska where she grew up provided rich examples of “primitive” native American art with its stylised designs depicting animals of the Pacific North West.
Lisa also draws inspiration from the finely stylised works of the Anasazi and Membres, the ancient people who once inhabited the South Western United States, what is now New Mexico, where she has also spent a great deal of time.
The designs she creates in her work, while influenced by these sources of inspiration, are unique and compose an amalgam of themes and colours. Lisa incorporates these designs into a variety of objects such as tables, commodes, lamps and murals.
Having lived on the Mediterranean coast of France and Spain, Lisa has incorporated into her work the colours and light of this region, combining designs of nature, among them the sun, moon, sea, and one of her favourite characters, the lizard, to create a kind of “Native Mediterranean Aesthetic”.
